Tangy BBQ Shredded Venison Sandwiches

As we head into fall, I’ve been wanting to achieve a delicious, tangy, comfort meal. Shredded BBQ beef sandwiches have always been a favorite of mine, but I wanted to make one that used venison since we have plenty of that in our freezer. Plus, after taste testing these, I’ve found it’s another great use for venison. WIN-WIN. This sauce is so tangy and delicious that it reminds me of a sweet version of an eastern Carolina sauce. It has that vinegar tang, but with a hint of sweetness. It’s the best of both bbq worlds. I love serving it up with homemade buns from your local bakery. It just adds to the flavor and the experience of biting into a sandwich that is a 10 out of 10!

Serve it up with your favorite sides. I prefer something like a homemade potato salad, and you can find mine by clicking here. Don’t forget to add some pickles! My homemade bread and butter pickles pair perfectly with this, find it here.

I hope this meal brings you some comfort and joy on a cool autumn evening. Dig in and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 (2-3lb) venison roast

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • Sprinkle of salt & pepper

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika

  • Pinch of red pepper flakes

  • 2 TBS of butter

  • Sauce
  • ½ cup apple cider vinegar

  • 1 cup of ketchup

  • 3 TBS brown sugar

  • 2 TBS molasses

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes

  • ¼ tsp black pepper

  • ¼ tsp garlic powder

Directions

  • For the roast: Add all the seasonings together and rub into the roast. Add butter to your skillet or if you have a crockpot with stovetop settings like I do, turn it to the stovetop setting and brown the roast on both sides.
  • Add the roast to the crockpot.
  • In a separate pot over medium heat, add all the ingredients for the bbq sauce, and stir until combined.
  • Add sauce to the crockpot with the roast. Put on the lid and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
  • Shred meat into a very fine shred, add back into crockpot & stir it around combining it with all of that delicious bbq sauce.
  • Serve with homemade buns & pickles!

Notes

  • Beef roast can be substituted.
  • Feel free to use any of your favorite BBQ sauces instead. Any bun will do as well, I just prefer the homemade variety.
